It’s located in L.A.’s Beverly Crest neighborhood and it’s a private property. Unfortunately, the Sheats-Goldstein house is a private property, so it’s not open to the public. Exclusive parties and events are held at Club James round the clock; Rihanna celebrated her 27th birthday party here, with Jay Z, Mick Jagger, and Leo DiCaprio in attendance. The house has also served as a setting for fashion ads and commercials, glamorous events, and, well, porn flicks. James Goldstein entrusted the home, its surrounding estate, as well as a 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and his eclectic wardrobe to the museum. This way, his and Lautner’s legacy will continue to inspire and attract curious minds and aspiring architects and designers.
College of Design
From the late 1920s through the 1950s, Art in Every day Life was used in classes at colleges and universities across the country, helping countless students gain the ability to recognize and create design harmony in their lives. By the 1930s, so many students had learned how to examine design problems that even major industrial designers noticed women demanding better-designed products. “There's no mistake where we're highlighting the city of Los Angeles in the background, and people are coming for this immersive experience where they can come and feel what it's like to be part of this Hollywood lifestyle for a minute. With the house having this incredible pedigree, all of the incredible shots that have happened here, the events that have happened here” says Spencer. Guided Tours
A significant portion of this collection, approximately 21,000 items, is related to costume and fashion accessories. This extensive collection provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of design in these areas. The Goldstein Museum of Design, also known as GMD, is located on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. The Sheats-Goldstein Residence, as the property is now known, still maintains all the original designs and touches that John Lautner carefully created. Businessman James Goldstein has been the sole owner of the Sheats-Goldstein house since he purchased it in 1972. He continues to spend time at the residence, but also often rents it out for photoshoots or as filming location for Hollywood movies or TV shows. Back in the day, he’s also said to have had an affair with American actress, singer, and Playboy Playmate Jayne Mansfield, who was married to someone else at the time. Still, he never married, and he has no children, which is why the decision to donate his unique home to LACMA came naturally. The house is so impressive that in 2021, Kanye West aka Ye enlisted James Goldstein to help him design and spruce up his newly purchased Malibu mansion.
Established in 1976, and named in honor of the Goldstein sisters, The Goldstein Museum of Design (GMD) is a research center in the College of Design and the only design museum in the Upper Midwest. Through our teaching collection of 36,000+ multidisciplinary objects and free, public exhibitions on the St. Paul and East Bank campuses, we advance learning in design history and practice for students and the greater community. Numbering over 22,000 items, and dating as far back as 1760, apparel and accessories make up the largest part of the museum’s collection. In 2004, the International Institute of Minnesota donated to the GMD 659 pieces of clothing from around the world.

A noted scholar of Jack Lenor Larsen, Dr. Zollinger interviewed many of Larsen’s former designers, employees, and colleagues to help preserve his legacy.
